During his visit to Sarejevo, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was attacked with a bomb further down the Appel Quay, but it missed and hit another car. The Archduke continued to the Town Hall before deciding to visit some victims of the bomb attack at the hospital.

Unfortunately, the driver had not heard about the change of plan and made a wrong turn at the Latin Bridge. Meanwhile, Gavrilo Princip (one of the terrorists) had gone into a café on the street (Schillers) when hearing that the attack had failed. As he left the shop he saw the Archduke's car reversing and rushed forward. He shot the Archduke and his wife Sophie dead in two shots.

Princip tried swallowing a cyanide pill and shooting himself but the poison was out-of-date and the gun was wrestled out of his hand. After being beaten up by the crowd, he was arrested and taken to the police station. All the other assassins were arrested). Princip died in prison in 1918.

This assassination led directly to the First World War.
