Shahid Minar/ Ochterlony Monument. - Situated on the northern extreme of the maidan one can never miss this 48.16 meters high tall monument. An unique combination of various architectural styles this monument/minar stands on an Egyptian styled base, on which rises a Syrian column, with a Turkish architecural styled cap atop. Built in the year 1828 it was named as Octerloney Monument(renamed as Sahid Minar in 1969) as a honour to Sir David Ochterlony who won the Nepal war in 1814 by outmaneuvering the gurkhas.
