Built in 1912, the Château Laurier is a landmark hotel in downtown Ottawa and named after Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the 7th Prime Minister of Canada, who was instrumental in its construction.

Originally built by the Grand Trunk Railway, the hotel became a part of Canadian National when they bought the Grand Trunk in 1924. In 1988, CN was bought by Canadian Pacific, and the hotel became a CP hotel. Finally, in 1999, Canadian Pacific bought the American Fairmont chain and decided to abandon its own name and adopt the name Fairmont for all of its hotels. At this time, the Château Laurier, like all CP hotels, was rebranded as a Fairmont.
