On this spot, at 09:15 am on July 4, 1946, the sovereign Third Philippine Republic was inaugurated by authorisation of United States President Harry S. Truman, after 48 years of American rule that followed three centuries of Spanish colonisation.

The flagpole due west of the Rizal Monument in Rizal Park is Kilometre Zero for all road distances on the island of Luzon and the rest of the Philippines. It is also, by law, the tallest flagpole in the country.
