Area: 40 acres
Date added to NRHP: 2/21/1978

Notes: The Chautauqua Movement was an adult education movement popular in the late 19th and very early 20th century that brought together speakers, entertainers and events in a communal format, usually during the summer in a kind of "camp" setting. This is one of only a few continuously-operated Chautauqua parks (and the only one west of the Mississippi River) remaining in the country. The park contains four large public buildings (including the Chautauqua Auditorium), as well as over a hundred tourist cottages, most of which were built during the park's historic period. The park received National Landmark status in May 2006. During peak tourist seasons the many cottages are rented out to visitors to cover operating expenses.
