Makenis is a town in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. Town was a major cultural and educational center of medieval Gegharkunik, which churches dating to the 10th to 13th century. Gyzylvang aprel 27, 1946 was by far the name of the village. Makenis since 1978. The village of 429 people in 1873, 807 in 1916, Azerbaijanis lived. Massacres by Armenians and Azerbaijanis were driven out in 1918. Armenians were resettled from Iran and Turkey in the village. Ashiq Ali was born here, a well-known personality
