  • This facility is built on the site of a former lead smelter that operated between 1901 and 1949, and was known as the Murray Smelter Superfund Site. The EPA found soils and groundwater were contaminated with lead, arsenic and other heavy metals. ASARCO (the operator of the smelter), EPA, Utah Department of Environmental Quality and local developers created plans for the site's cleanup and redevelopment. ASARCO removed or capped the contaminated soils in 1998, and continues to monitor the site. Two other old smelter sites nearby in Midvale are undergoing the same treatments, and will eventually be cleaned up for redevelopment.
  • Actually, there were smelters on the site as far back as 1872. ASARCO bought the old smelters then built a new smelter in 1901-02.
