Freienhagen, an 800-year-old independent city, was integrated into Waldeck during the land reforms of the Seventies. Its old nickname of "Die Stadt im Walde" [The City in the Forest] is borne out by the map. It is surrounded by forest, which is still jointly owned by town inhabitants. The imagery also cloearly shows the course of the former city walls. The town also possesses an unusual twist-turret stone church, which still resembles a defensive fortification. Also worth seeing is Rennert's Butcher Shop, home of a sausage with cult status in Waldeck, the "Luftgetrocknete"
