'University' Station on the Saltivska Line was opened on 10 August 1984.
It is located beneath the Maidan Svobody ('Freedom Square') and is named after the old Kharkiv National University, which is situated on this square.

Until 1994 the station was called Dzerzhynska according to the name of the square (Ploshcha Dzerzhynskoho), after the founder of the Soviet Secret Police 'Iron Felix' Dzherzhinsky.
