The garden was founded in 1804-1805 by Vasily Karazin (the founder of the Kharkiv University).
It was named the University Garden.
An astronomical observatory was built the garden in 1808.
The oldest in Ukraine Kharkiv Zoo was opened at the western end of the park in 1896.
The cascade staircase and the fountain were built in the western part of the garden in 1955 - on the 300th anniversary of Kharkiv.
The 'Ukraine' concert hall was built in the park in 1963.
The next fountain was built at the central avenue of the garden in 1967, and it obtained a light and music in 1977.
A new building of Kharkiv Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet was constructed in the southern part of the park during 1970-1990.
