military, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place
One of the few remaining earthen fortifications built to defend Washington, DC during the Civil War.
Fort Foote was designed to defend the river approach to the city.
The fort was armed with over a dozen massive 15-inch Rodman cannons, two of which remain at the site today.
The few Park Service placards around the site have been heavily vandalized, so it is hard to know what you are looking at, unless you are an expert on earthen fortifications.
