Build in the 16th century as part of the city defense wall and serving as an entrance gate, this big old tower has historically been named by its local population "Drommedaris" (with an extra 'm') or simply "Drom". It strategically overlooks the harbours of the historic city of Enkhuizen, a city once more important than Amsterdam. The city is situated at the centre of the IJsselmeer, now a closed innersea and a great place for sailing. But in the 17th and 18th century it was called the Suydersee, a dangerous sea connected to the Northsea and in those days part of the most important merchant routes from Holland to the rest of the world. The old tower today mainly serves as a cultural centre and has a bar in it. Go there for a beer or coffee! It is known for its relaxed atmosphere.
