In 1887, Baron Allios Gillaume Engine von Winckler platted the original Park Hill development on 32 acres of land he owned east of City Park. This development was bordered by present day Montview Boulevard on the south, Colorado Boulevard on the west, East 26th Avenue on the north, and Dahlia Street on the east, placing it in what is now the western portion of South Park Hill.

Development of Park Hill really took off in the early 1900s, especially in the 20s and 30s, with varied housing styles, including Tudor, Queen Anne, Bungalows, and Denver Squares. As the neighborhood grew, settlers from many nations, including England, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy, moved in, as did African Americans.
After World War II, the northern portion of the neighborhood was developed, especially with housing to support the workforce of nearby Stapleton Airport.

In 2010, South Park Hill had 8,590 residents in 3,449 households. The racial makeup of South Park Hill is 77.42% non-latino white, 7.97% African American, 2.41% Asian, 0.48% Native American. Hispanic or Latino is 8.87% of the population. In 2000, Its median income was $88,479, well above the city's overall median income.
