St Francis Xavier Major Seminary was established in 1983 by a decision of the Catholic - Bishops' Conference of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei made in 1982. It is a Diocesan Seminary under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Singapore. From 1983 - July 1987, the Major Seminary operated at the premises of the Minor Seminary at Upper Serangoon Road. In August 1987, it moved to the present location at 199 Punggol Seventeenth Avenue. It was officially opened and blessed on 28 January 1988 by Archbishop Gregory Yong. This seminary is also affiliated to the Pontificia Universitas Urbaniana. Under the terms of the affiliation, students who complete the full course in philosophy and theology can sit for the Baccalaureate in Theology.
