Alliance University - Nyack College

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Washington Street, 2
university, office building, skyscraper, International style architecture

261-foot, 20-story International-style office building completed in 1972. Designed by Morris Lapidus as a third building of the Whitehall complex, it has large steel corner columns, between which are uninterrupted curtain walls of bronze glass with narrow steel framing. On the northern elevation, the curtain wall extends back for three windows, with the rest of the facade being concrete, back to where it meets to neighboring Downtown Club building. The rear of the building backs up to the Whitehall Building Annex. The ground floor is deeply recessed behind an arcade of squat, granite-clad columns.

The money transfer company Western Union, which no longer handles telegrams, hasn’t been on Washington Street since the 1980s, but the name sticks. It is alternately named 17 Battery Place North. Nyack College, a large Christian liberal arts school and seminary, moved into the building in 2013.
