Grissom Memorial Elementary School was built in 1973. The school was named after the astronaut Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom. Gus Grissom was born in 1926 in Mitchell, Indiana. He named his MR-4 spacecraft Liberty 7 since the capsule resembled a bell. Gus Grissom died on January 27, 1967 when the Apollo 1 capsule caught fire while still on the launch pad.
