World's Only Man-Made Geyser (Soda Springs, Idaho)

 Upload a photo
Soda Springs has the only man-made geyser in the world. It was discovered in an
attempt to find a hot water source for a swimming pool. On Nov. 30, 1937
the drill went down 315 ft. and unleashed the geyser.

The extreme pressure is caused by carbon dioxide gas mixing with water in a
subterranean chamber. It is now capped and controlled by a timer.

Every hour on the hour.

  • Actually, there are over a dozen similar non-steam-driven, drilled-well, water-emitting "geysers" in the world--including, Herlany (Slovakia), Andernach (Germany), and Crystal Geyser, Utah. By the way, the Soda Springs geyser is slightly to the west of the wikimapia box. Visitor also should be aware that in Soda Springs, Idaho, the geyser is not allowed to erupt if even a slight wind is blowing from west to east. Since this occurs often, visitors traveling specifically to Soda Springs to see the geyser are often left disappointed.
