The Old Town Hall occupies a strategic position in Gateshead Town Centre. It is a 'gateway' site and provides an important first impression of the town centre when approached from the north and west. The site area, that the Old Town Hall occupies part of, itself contains a significant group of listed buildings and these buildings plus adjacent developable area provide the opportunity for this site to make a major contribution to the life and vitality of the town centre. The site is adjacent to existing routes between the town centre and the Quays and, as these areas are redeveloped, the need to improve links between those projects and the Community groups in the rest of the Borough becomes increasingly important.

It has been reformed into the new Tyneside cinema.
