Built in 1964, the J.O.C. is a 4-floor concrete and steel building that has no windows and was built to withstand a category IV hurricane as well as atmospheric nuclear tests that occurred in the 1960's.
The ground floor had a side building attached which contained three long snaking corridors and 55 shower heads you could walk through. This facility served as a decontamination room.

It was gutted entirely in 2004, due to an asbestos abatement project.

Comments

  • The entire island could still be renovated as a tourist spot, it's so beautiful. For example, placing a few hotels/buildings, made of completely natural products like wood, bamboo, etc. would make it so attractive, and on top of everything it is located close to Hawaii
  • Occupancy not recommended due to the plutonium scattered all over the island back in 1962, and all the chemical weapons residue from when this place was used for disposal of same.
  • Like that of Agent Orange, for instance.
  • what a stupid idea
  • The island was scrubbed and decontaminated in the early 2000's; all the contaminated soil was collected and buried under a two foot thick concrete slab, and the contaminated buildings were razed and sealed within the munition bunkers. Surface radiation levels were deemed nominal, and chemical weapon residue has not been detected in the storage or disposal areas.
