Mykhailivska Street is the only pedestrian street in Zhytomyr.
It previously was named Piliponivska.

In 1810, the Old Believers Pylypivtsi (Pilipony), escaping the brutal persecution in Russia, arrived to Zhytomyr and settled in the lands of the Bernardine monastery, founded their village Piliponivka.
It is now the area of the current Mykhailivska Street.
Pilipony were famous as great builders and weavers.

In the 1850s, the governor Synelnykov relocated the Old Believers to the area of the current Dovzhenko Street.
After the construction of the St. Michael's Church, the street was named Sviato-Mykhailivska.
