Until 1939 – Gorokhovskaya ulitsa (in the 19th century – Gorokhovaya meaning Peas street), dubbed by Gorokhovo Pole (Peas Field) area (known since 1718), which was a royal pea yard. Renamed in honour of the 200th anniversary of Matthew (Matvei) Kazakov (1738—1812)  famous Russian architect who created in Moscow many remarkable buildings (Petrovsky Palace, the Senate in the Kremlin etc.).

One of his creations is located on this street: the Church of the Ascension on the Gorokhovo (Peas) field built in 1770—1773 (nearby Voznesenskaya (Ascencion) ulitsa, nowadays ulitsa Radio was named after it ).
The palace of Count Alexei Razoumovsky was built on the same street in 1793.
