The first development built in Battery Park City, Gateway Plaza was constructed from 1983 to 1985. Designed by Jack Brown and Irving E. Gershon Associates, the five acre complex consists of parking facilities and 1,712 apartment units in three 309-foot (94-metre) 34-story towers, two 7-story buildings, and one 6-story building. The buildings are composed of concrete slabs, painted tan on some of the facades, with casement windows in black metal frames. There is a plaza in the center, with a gated entry to the complex on South End Avenue. Retail just outside the gate includes a Cafe Express, a florist, a newsstand, a Chase Bank branch, Battery Park Pharmacy, Gateway Cleaners, Gristedes market, Pick A Bagel, Bulls & Bears Winery, Picasso Pizzeria, The Black Hound pub, and Southwest NY restaurant.
