Historic Police Station (Jacksonville, Florida)

USA / Florida / Jacksonville / Jacksonville, Florida / Liberty Street, 711

In June 1924, the City sold the Jacksonville Police
Building (corner of Newnan St. and Forsyth St. where The Florida Theatre Stands)property to Atlanta investor S.A. Lynch for $90,000. The agreement contained a time clause to enable the City to acquire a new site and build a new police station. In 1926, the new police headquarters was completed at 711 Liberty Street (shown above). This classic brick and cast-stone building was designed by the architectural firm of Marsh & Saxelbye. It served as Jacksonville’s central police station until the mid-1970’s, when it was converted to become a state crime lab. In recent years, the crime lab moved into a new building in the LaVilla area and the building is now once again occupied by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
