The Blockhouse Ranch was named after a log cabin on the ranch. It was owned by Anna Martin, a prosperous pioneer banker, rancher and businesswoman. She was the first female bank president in Texas and only the second in the nation. At the time of her death, she owned over 60,000 acres of land spread out over four counties. The Blockhouse Ranch at that time consisted of 27,000 acres. The San Saba river runs through the ranch and contains a locally famous, spring fed, deep hole of water called the Blue Hole. During the severe drought during the 1950's the Blue Hole was one of the very few bodies of water to not run dry, thus saving the livestock of many people in the area. The majority of the ranch, while split up, is still owned by the descendants of Anna Martin.
