Wreck of USS Stump (DD 978)

USA / North Carolina / Nags Head /
military, shipwreck, destroyer (ship), United States Navy

The 16th member of the Spruance Class of Destroyers, USS Stump commissioned into US Navy service in 1978 as a member of the Atlantic Fleet based out of Norfolk. She would go on to serve from Norfolk for 26 years before she decommissioned in 2004 and was laid up at NIMSF Philadelphia and stripped of valuable parts and material.

In 2006 she and her sister USS Comte De Grasse (DD-974) were selected to serve as target ships for Fleet Exercises and towed out of Philadelphia to this location where the USS Mason, USS Arleigh Burke, USS Ramage and USS Cape St. George were waiting. The Stump took 45 5-inch rounds at the waterline from the assembled warships and sank quickly by the stern, but her bow remained vertical in the water for over 90 minutes while water pressure slowly blew through her bulkheads and sank her on June 7th, 2006 in 2000 fathoms.

A shame, really. I was the decommissioning 3-MC, and, we, the decom crew, spent a good deal of time & tax dollars getting this gal ready for a UNITAS and eventual sale to one of our S. American allies. Everything seemed to be inline, UNITAS came and went with a successful deployment, then...orders came down for a full decom.
