Standing at 55 feet, the original octagonal limestone tower hidden within the eight Doric columns serves as both an aid to navigation and a monument to the French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The lighthouse itself was put in service in 1859, with the new columned monument surrounding it added in 1909.
