Manjarabad Fort

India / Karnataka / Sakleshpur / National Highway No. 48 (Mangalore-Nelamangala)
 fortification, star fort

A bit about this fort from Wikipedia- Manjarabad fort is located just outside of Sakleshpur on National Highway 48. The fort is reputed to have been constructed by Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore as a strategic defensive location as it commands the approach to the plateau beyond Sakleshpur from the coast. It is also believed that he had constructed a tunnel from this fort to another fort in Srirangapattana near Mysore.

The fort is on one level unlike other forts which are multi-level. This seems cross-shaped pit with steps leading into it seems to be an ancient well, probably the only source of water in the fort tippu's famous barrack and served as a safe house during war with the British.

Completed in 1792.

I have been to this fort. In fact we had a farm quite close to it. It is now deserted and over grown with lantana bushes. It is a beautiful place, and situated just before the ghats section leading to mangalore.

Best place to visit during winter, you could see the surroundings covered by mist, so it has been called as Manjrabad in kannada. Donigal ghat is about7 km from sakaleshpur - Mangalore road. easily access by road.

interesting place, though a small fort but it still retains its shape though a heritage structure, you cant find anyone taking care of the structure. if properly looked after n developed it can be a greater tourist place.
