USS Buchanan was the 13th member of the Charles F. Adams Class of Guided Missile Destroyers and served with the US Pacific Fleet from 1962 to 1991.
Following her decommissioning, she was laid up at Pearl Harbor NISMF and was selected as a target for RIMPAC 2000. After absorbing three Hellfire missiles, three Harpoon missiles and a 2,400-pound laser-guided bomb the ship was still stubbornly afloat. US Navy EOD teams had to board the ship and scuttled her with a 200lb explosive charge placed in what was left of her bow. The Buchanan sank in 2,450 fathoms on June 14th, 2000.
