Cathedral of St. Domnius (Split)

Croatia / Split-Dalmacija / Split / Kraj Svetog Duje
cathedral, interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage, Roman Catholic church, tourist attraction

Dedicated to St Domnius, the Cathedral of Split is perhaps most notable for the building's original use: as the mausoleum of an energetic persecutor of the early Christian Church, the Roman emperor Diocletian (Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus, b 245 AD, d 312 AD, reigned 284-305 AD). Diocletian was also a reformer and was an important stabilizing influence on his empire. His palace remains remarkably intact, forming a significant part of the current fabric of the old city of Split.
The Cathedral therefore possesses architectural features of the Roman period, including its vaulted ceiling. The church has been added to over time and has an elegant and impressive bell tower.
In 1979 UNESCO listed Split as a place of World Cultural Heritage.

Comments

  • nije sv.Trifun nego sv.Duje
  • Thanks. My mistake: St Domnius, not St Triphun!
