Kent's Masonic Lodge was originally the home of Marvin Kent, whom the city was named after. Marvin Kent (1816-1908), the son of Zenas Kent, was a merchant of Kent, Ohio, the planner, promoter, developer, and first president of the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad [now a part of the Erie Lackawanna system], president of the Kent National Bank, Ohio State Senator [Republican], 1876-1878, and a prominent Portage County citizen.

The majestic Marvin Kent home — the same house four U.S. presidents have slept in — the same house once considered one of the most elegant private residences in northern Ohio.

The house was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1974.
