Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurt am Main)

Germany / Brandenburg / Frankfurt / Frankfurt am Main
cathedral, church, Gothic (architecture), listed building / architectural heritage

The Frankfurt Cathedral, or Saint Bartholomeus's, was originally built in the 14th and 15th centuries, upon the foundation of an even earlier church. From 1356 onwards, emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were elected in this collegiate church as kings in Germany, and from 1562 to 1792, emperors-elect were crowned here.
During WW2, it was severely damaged by Allied bombing, and was rebuilt in the 1950s.
During the reconstruction, ancient Roman ruins were discovered below (present day) street level. Do visit, if you get the chance!
