The church is in the site of the old Bear Inn, the former town house of the Abbots of Tavistock who ran one of the richest abbeys in Devon from the tin, lead and silver mines at Bere Alston. The Bear Inn was eventually torn down and replaced by the Sacred Heart Church. Designed by C E Ware and Leonard Stokes in 1881, the church was built in the early 1880's - the tower was not completed until 1926. The original design shows a pointed spire on the tower. In a French, Gothic style, it incorporated a 15th-century window from the Bear Inn on the staircase leading to the choir loft.
