The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) was founded in 1884 under the name Privileged National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia (Привилегована народна банка Краљевине Србије). The organisation of the NBS was based upon the model of National Bank of Belgium which was in those days an example of a modern organised banking institution.
WWI and WWII
After WWI and constitution of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the NBS grew into Privileged National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
During WWII (April 1941 - October 1944.) the Bank functioned from its London office. In September 1946, bank was nationalised and renamed as the "National Bank of Yugoslavia".

As of 2005, as prescribed by the Law on the Implementation of the Constitutional Charter of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, the National Bank of Yugoslavia works as an institution of Republic of Serbia under the name of the National Bank of Serbia. National Bank of Serbia issues the Serbian dinar(CSD), the official currency of Serbia.

The old building
The building housing the National Bank of Serbia was one of the most representative buildings in Belgrade's old downtown core. It was built for the purpose and adorned with some of the most lavish decoration and materials ever used in Serbia. An addition to the innitial building was later added completing its visual and architectural whole. The building was built in the renaissance revival style and is one of the best examples of this style in Serbia and this part of Europe. The NBS headquarters is revered for its fine interior. Even though the headquarters have moved from this building it still houses a few offices of the National Bank of Serbia and will soon become a museum.

NBS moved its headquarters into one of the most modern buildings in Serbia. The massive glass building started construction during the 90’s however due to financial problems and controversy surrounding the owner of the building construction was halted. After democratic power was restored in Serbia the building continued its construction again and was officially opened in early 2006. It is located in one of the most famous streets in Belgrade, Nemanjina.
