North Charleston is a suburban city in the metropolitan area of Charleston, South Carolina. As of 2009 estimates, the city had a total population of 97,601. Named after the city of Charleston. Originally a tract of plantations, the site of phosphate mining after the Civil War. Much of the area was purchased by a development corporation in 1912 and developed as an industrial city. Incorporated as a city in 1972.
