The area now known as Ambury Regional Park was used by Māori from the adjacent pa on Mangere Mountain for gardening.

Ninety five archaeological sites were recorded on Ambury Regional Park in 1981, the most intact group of archaeological features is located at the north eastern end of the park, accessed via Kiekie Rd. Here, stone mounds and garden walls are a prominent feature.
