Cornwall Park

New Zealand / Auckland /

Farm land donated by John Logan Campbell to the city of Auckland in 1910. Administered by a Trust.

Originally Campbell intended to build a large Italianate Mansion here and initally wanted to name the land 'Corinth Park'. Worried by the increasing rate of suburban development he was seeing on the Auckland Isthmus Campell wanted to provide successive generations with rural amenities and set aside his One Tree Hill farm to that end.

His donation coincided with the visit of the Duke & Duchess of York [and Cornwall] in 1910. As the sitting Mayor David Goldie was a strict Tee-totaller and refused to toast the Regal visitors with alcohol he resigned and Campbell was made Mayor for the period of the Royal visit. As it seemed suitable the name Cornwall Park was used instead of Corinth Park and in return Campbell was made a Knight by the Duke [later George V].
