Oriental Building (Kuala Lumpur)

Malaysia / Kuala Lumpur / Kuala Lumpur / Jalan Tun Perak, 32
 office building, 1930s construction

Address:
Oriental Building
No. 32, Jalan Tun Perak
50100 Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia

A large and pretty Art Deco office building, once occupied by Radio Television Malaysia (www.rtm.gov.my/), now (as of 2010) a CIMB Bank branch. The building was designed by A.O. Coltman in 1930. Due to its height, the building was perhaps one of the earliest skyscrapers in the city, now dwarfed by several surrounding skyscrapers. The fact that most city dwellers who work in the vicinity of Jalan Tun Perak do not know the age of the Oriental Building indicate both the agelessness of its design and that the building has been very well-maintained.

However, the classical grandeur of the Oriental Building has been marred somewhat by the rather obtrusive posters and banners, and the constant presence of illegal hawkers and litter outside the building. Much improvement could be made if the posters were tastefully framed and positioned, and the area outside the Masjid Jamek LRT station rid of illegal traders and litter. The illegal businesses contribute nothing to the economy of the country. It also undermine City Hall's efforts to maintain hygiene, health and cleanliness standards and create the impression that petty crime is condoned in Kuala Lumpur.

  • Remember that flood a few months back? The place doesn't appear to be operation because of that. When I was there last Friday, I found damaged furnitures are piled up in the building, and the grand entrance is barricaded by sandbags. What a waste.
