Santa Maria Novella railway station (Florence)

Italy / Toscana / Florence / Piazza della Stazione
 train station, railway terminal

The first station of Florence, "Leopolda", was built in 1844 and designed by Robert Stephenson, son of the railroad, and was one of the first stations in Italy, located outside the city walls. Four years later he was made the second station, "Maria Antonia", within the walls of the city, a major breakthrough in the design of the time. The "Maria Antonia" was destroyed to make way for the current station, overlooking the church of S. Maria Novella, is a masterpiece of rationalism and of the highest expressions of the modern movement in Italian architecture.
