Is part of a great number of military structures still located in the Historical center of Florence. Probably a strategical choice, in the hope that concerned for cultural heritage enemy wouldn't bomb it. This strategy in part worked out during second world war, when retreating Nazists avoided to destroy Ponte Vecchio... it probably won't stop Talibans...
