Zainsk (Russian: Заи́нск is a town in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, located on the Stepnoy Zay River (Kama's tributary), 287 kilometers (178 mi) east of Kazan. Population: 41,803 (2010 Census).
It was founded in 1652–1656 as a fortress in the so-called Trans-Kama Line (Rus. Zakamskaya Cherta).
When the Zainsk Powerplant was commissioned in 1956, a workers' settlement called Novy Zai was established. On the 5th of April 1978, Novy Zai was united with the old township of Zai, and renamed as Zainsk. The word "Zai" per se means just "River" in Old Tatarian.
