Carlton is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota. The population was 862 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carlton County.

on Feb. 15, 1870 the Northern Pacific railroad was started at what was called Northern Pacific Junction. Twin Lakes on the Military Road was Carlton County's county seat from 1857 to 1890. In 1881 Northern Pacific Junction was incorporated as a village and 1890 it became the county seat. The following year the name was changed to Carlton.

In 1870 the Northern Pacific Railroad decided to finish a stretch of track that would link Duluth to St. Paul. Temporary shacks were erected for the workmen at the place that was soon known as "Northern Pacific Junction". In 1881 this settlement was incorporated as "Carlton".

The original Railroad was relocated south, and is now the William Munger bike trail, with the trailhead where the station and maintenence yards were.
