Basirhat is also the headquarters of the Basirhat subdivision of the Uttar 24 Pargana District. There has been a proposal to carve out a separate Basirhat district in recent years. It well connected with Kolkata by road and rail.
The name of Basirhat probably comes from the Old Bangla word 'Bashir' meaning sea-salt as there was a big market of salt in Basirhat (Hat meaning market).
