Considering that higher education is big business, it is only natural that some of Malaysia’s largest companies have invested in universities and colleges, thus playing a meaningful part in the expansion of private tertiary education over the last 20 years or so. For many of these players, the ventures into higher learning is not merely about making profits. They recognise that they are being socially responsible by providing Malaysians with easier access to higher education.
Multimedia University is Malaysia's first private university. It has two campuses with one in Cyberjaya and another in Melaka. The Cyberjaya's campus is built on an 80-hectare plot of land with all the advantages of high technology and is equipped with various intelligent features such as multimedia learning facilities, intelligent building systems, electronic governance, a digital library, and an integrated campus management system. The campus design is based on a techno organic concept that places importance on a pedagogic and inquisitive approach conducive for learning and experimentation. The relationship between the campus and Cyberjaya is intended to be similar to the relationship Stanford University shares with the Silicon Valley.
As of 2010, Multimedia University has produced 22,820 graduates, and a recent survey (conducted in early 2010) demonstrates that 93% of these secure employment within 6 months of the completion of studies. The university has also grown an outstanding pool of international students numbering at 4,200 from 75 countries. Establishing itself as a major player in research and development, and maintaining excellent ties with the industry through collaborations and research partnerships, MMU now hosts 13 Research Centres to date, focusing in the niche areas of nanotechnology, microsystems, biometrics, virtual reality, microwave and telecommunications, engineering, photonics, advanced robotics and business.
