Originally declared as a National Park by Pres. M. L. Quezon in 1936, the area covers 76,900 hectares. It was later amended by Pres. Carlos P. Garcia (1957-1963) to 72,954 hectares as some portions were converted to agricultural areas; further declared as protected area by then Pres. Fidel V. Ramos.
