 camp, community

Former Farm Security Administration camp opened in 1937 to house migrant workers displaced by the Dust Bowl. The Shafter camp was the third camp built and provided sanitary living conditions for the workers and families living here.

The southeast corner was the original camp where families lived in tents and trailers. Some of the foundations are still visible. On an adjacent parcel, 40 houses were built to house workers with steady rather than seasonal employment. The rent at the time, which included electricity and water, was $8.20 per month.
