nuclear waste storage

The WIF is designed for the long-term storage of spent fuel rods from nuclear submarines. The rods are kept in a deep concrete pond lined with stainless steel. Flasks are delivered by rail and offloaded remotely by the overhead crane. They are submerged in the pond and the fuel handling machine empties each rod in turn, storing them in stainless steel racks under water.
