"The site opened more or less as it is today (we still use most of the original buildings) in 1916 or so. It was operated by the Worth family and called Worth Steel.

There was a huge open hearth there. My office trailer is in the original open hearth building, but the furnace is long gone and we have offices, maintenance shops, and raw materials storage in that space these days.

In the 1950's J. D. Rockefeller's Colorado Fuel and Iron company bought it and operated it until the 1970's when it was sold to a French company and operated as Phoenix Steel. Phoenix went bankrupt in 1986 and the property was idle for 2 years before being bought by the China Industrial Trust and Investment Company (CITIC) and becoming CitiSteel. I joined in 1991 and have been there ever since.

In 2007 or so the company was purchased by HIG Capital Investments of Florida. They pumped in some capital then took the company public. The bought it for around $130 million in cash and assumed debt and took it public in an IPO that grossed over $250 million! They made their money big time. The company was renamed Claymont Steel.

Two years ago we were bought by Evraz of Russia for over $550 million! We are now Evraz Claymont Steel.
