NATO Reporting name :
Bereza Class Medium 'De-Gaussing' Ship
“ПКЗ 120”
launched 22.03.1988,
commissioned 27.01.1989,
The deperming or de-Gaussing vessels are earmarked for specific activities to reduce the magnetic fields of combat ships, so as to at least reduce their vulnerability to magnetically actuated mines. Available by the Soviet Navy special design pr.523 and pr.219 (RRF - bezobmotochnogo degaussing station) was already developed in the 1960’s but did not then meet the increasing demands of the fleet with this type of vessels. Developed later pr.1779 and its modifications over sotvetstvovali increased requirements, but due to the large load shipyards of the USSR by the early 1980’s the Navy had an acute lack of ships of this type.
As a result, it was decided to build a degaussing ship in the shipyards of the Polish People's Republic. The draft of the new vessel has been made on the Northern Shipyard in Gdansk, on the tactical-technical task of the Soviet Navy in 1982 and got the project number 130. The main purpose of design of this project is to electromagnetic processing vessels and measurement of magnetic and electric fields.
This vessel is assigned to the 474 Batt. Of Supply Ships based at Lomonosov (Ломоно́сов), subordiante to the Leningrad Naval Base (HQ Kronstadt)
