Most probable location, according to the Wikipedia article on Ed Woods' film "Plan 9 From Outer Space," which identifies the studio "...down a small alley next to the Harvey Apartments at 5640 Santa Monica Boulevard." This building most closely fits the bill, not the building directly to the east, which is just an apartment building, not a studio or stage.

After carefully examining this property via Google Maps street view and Bing Maps bird's eye view, this building looks to be land locked-completely inaccessible from any point except by going through locked gates and narrow alley ways. Very interesting.

Looks like I need to make a road trip. I'll keep you posted.

Update: Went on a field trip to Hollywood in Jan, 2011. My son and I walked this neighborhood, and found this building completely bound in by buildings and fences. The only way in is a gate next to the Harvey apartments. Unfortunately the gate was locked. However, there were two cars parked in the narrow alley and the large front double doors of the building were open and we could see inside. The walls were freshly painted dark and there is a satellite TV dish on top. It looked stark and basically empty, but clearly in use, it had the feeling of being a rehearsal hall or music recording or video stage.

Even though we could not get in, I am convinced this is the correct location for the filming of Plan 9. As we circled the block on foot, we passed the apartment building to the east, the site of the other tag locating the Plan 9 studio. It is clearly an apartment building and is very old, it has no look of being retrofitted to apartments from a sound stage. It clearly has always been an apartment building.

I will keep you posted with new information about this odd little building.

Update July, 2016 The building appears to be abandoned and in disrepair.
