residential neighbourhood, housing / apartment colony
After partition in 1947, arrival of large numbers of Muslim population from India led to an increase of Dhaka population by 103%. Dhaka was a Zila town with urban area of 6-7 sq. miles only. It didn't have high land to build infrastructure quickly to cope as capital city of the Eastern wing of Pakistan. The Govt. took up construction of colony type residential blocks in 1948-49 at the open spaces of Azimpur and Motijheel. Initially, 42 numbers of 3-storey apartment blocks each with 12 flats were taken up in Azimpur and completed in 1951.
The buildings on the northern half were constructed later for Govt. officers.
Most of the top bureaucrats, teachers, lawyers, doctors and engineers immediately after '47 partition stayed in this colony.
